Foundations of The Royal House and the Gallery
Flowers and World Views
In 2013 the SMK presents the exhibition Flowers and World Views. Taking its point of departure in the Gottorfer Codex, an album of flower paintings, the exhibition shows how 17th and 18th century artists translated flowers into pictures.
The Gottorfer Codex is a unique collection comprising a total of four volumes, all hailing from the library at Gottorf Castle. The work consists entirely of paintings of flowers, shrubs, and fruit and is one of the museum’s highlights. The museum is grateful to the Foundation of Queen Margrethe and Prince Henrik for being amongst the partners enabling us to welcome visitors to an exhibition of floral splendour.
The Royal House and Bjørn Nørgaard
In 1994, Bjørn Nørgaard received the Ridderkorset award – four years after he created a piece of Danish history in the form of the eleven tapestries that today adorn the great hall in Christiansborg Castle. But the relationship between Bjørn Nørgaard and the Royal House doesn’t end there – the royal couple’s sepulchral monument was also designed by the artist. Thus it comes as no surprise that in 2010, Queen Margrethe & Prince Henrik’s Foundation and the Foundation of King Frederik & Queen Ingrid, together with other foundations and sponsors, contributed to supporting the extensive Bjørn Nørgaard exhibition Re-modelling the World. The Foundations of the Royal House have also supported several of the museum's other exhibition and restoration projects.
Bjørn Nørgaard. Re-modelling the World
Bjørn Nørgaard is an uncompromising artist who has been leaving his remarkable signature and stamp on Danish art since the 1960s. As part of the experimental art scene, he radically and provocatively challenged conceptions about art and its relationship with institutions and reality.
In 2010, for the first time, the National Gallery of Denmark gave the public the chance to experience a collective profile of Bjørn Nørgaard’s multifaceted art works from the 1960s through to today. And it is largely thanks to the Foundations of Queen Margrethe & Prince Henrik and King Frederik & Queen Ingrid and others that the Gallery was able to present this unique retrospective view of sculpture, installations, actions, film and graphics.
