Elias van den Broeck, Flowers, 1672-1708

A stipend from the Samuel H. Kress Foundation, administered by the Foundation of the American Institute for Conservation, recently made it possible for the SMK to complete a major project: the conservation of five unique flower paintings by the Dutch artist Elias van den Broeck. Dating back to the 18th century, the paintings had never been treated before, so it gives the SMK great pleasure to see the paintings conserved, restored, and exhibited as part of the exhibition Flowers and World Views.

Flowers and World Views
In 2013 the SMK presents the exhibition Flowers and World Views. Taking its point of departure in the Gottorfer Codex, an album of flower paintings, the exhibition shows how 17th and 18th century artists translated flowers into pictures.
The museum is very grateful to the Samuel H. Kress Foundation, administered by the Foundation of the American Institute for Conservation, for the contribution of a special Conservation Fellowship and for being amongst the partners enabling us to welcome visitors to an exhibition of floral splendour.
