A crazy detail
This entry is a little like an arts quiz: we show a detail from a Hammershøi painting – and next week we will reveal the title of the painting. This is not, however, a quiz. Rather, we want to call your attention to Hammershøi’s greatly varied technique and his special approach to the canvas.
For this particular detail he presumably used the end of his brush to scratch the paint. The white canvas is showing, creating a rough, drawing-like effect in the middle of the painting. You can also see how Hammerhøi has applied other brushstrokes in small, square fields that form a kind of nuanced pattern across the canvas.
Hammershøi is obviously interested in how paint can quite deliberately be structured in various ways across the surface, and he shows many examples of how a painting can be built.
