Preliminary study: Fishwife, seated, 1836
Everyday life
Købke peopled the street of Østerbrogade with animals and people. In the left-hand, sunny side of the painting we see the fishwives taking fish to their small stalls on Gammel Strand. Købke was ready at the scene, pencil in hand, and studied the movements of bodies; some engaged in the act of hauling a load, others at rest.
