Collections and Research

The Collection and Research department comprises The Royal Collection of Paintings and Sculptures, The Royal Collection of Graphic Art, and The Royal Cast Collection.

The department’s objective is to build and expand the collections through new acquisitions; to record art historical data, to conduct research based on the works of art and artists represented in the Gallery’s collections, and to present the results of such research in connection with exhibitions and publications.

In addition to this, several employees work on “Art Stories”, a project conducted by SMK Digital, while a number of student staff handle tasks associated with e.g. staffing of the Study Room at the Royal Collection of Graphic Art and the handling of telephone and written inquiries from scholars and visitors.

The department also encompasses the Center for Advanced Studies in Master Drawings, a strategic research initiative founded in 2002 with a view to publishing catalogues raisonné detailing the museum’s stock of older drawings from abroad.
