The National Gallery of Denmark sends the Roskilde Festival into the air with a huge art project
With the heat from the first rays of sunlight on the first day of this year's Roskilde Festival, festival participants will send a giant balloon made of used plastic bags into the air over the Festival. The National Gallery of Denmark has invited Museo aero solar to the festival and will create a do-it-together workshop during the warm-up days. The launch of the balloon is planned for the festival's first day, 30 June, at sunrise.
The National Gallery of Denmark presents Museo aero solar at this year's Roskilde Festival. A flying museum in the form of a gigantic solar-heated balloon made entirely of recycled plastic bags. The project is a so called do-it-together project which explores new ways of thinking about energy and space. In three simple maneuvers - cut, paste and decorate, collected plastic bags will be transformed into a giant balloon. Warmed by the heat of the rising sun the balloon will lift and fly.
The project began in 2007 at the initiative of the Argentinean artist Tomas Saraceno, who has recently exhibited in the museum’s Sculpture Street with the giant installation Biospheres (2009 - 2010). In the intersection between art, science and architecture, Saraceno presents visions for the solution to humanity's social and environmental problems using alternative sustainable accommodation facilities in the skies above us.
Wrap it up with youth laboratories for art – u.l.k.
In a more down to earth terrain, the museum’s young volunteer art pilots from u.l.k. will also work with plastic. The independent project WrapLab will convert the Art City camping area to a laboratory of transparent plastic wrap walls, canvases and furniture with space for free expression and creativity.
There will also be daily workshops during the warm-up days with festival guests, participating artists and a scientist challenging and testing the properties of plastic.
A nomadic project
Since its inception, Muse aero solar has developed into a grassroots based project with participants from around the world. New sections are added each time it travels to a new destination and it grows in size. Museo aero solar has previously been built in places including United Arab Emirates, Italy, France, Colombia, Albania, Israel and USA and now in Roskilde.
Do-it-together and launch
Each day during the festival warm-up days, 26 - 29 June, festival participants will build the balloon in the Dome in Art City, and participate in WrapLab in the Art City area. Plastic bags will be collected at the camping areas and everyone is invited to bring bags. Launch of the balloon will occur at sunrise on the festival's first day, 30 June. In the last hour before sunrise the balloon will be spread out on the ground and filled with air from a large air blower. When the sun rises, the air in the balloon is heated and it rises from the ground.
