Breath and rhythm in the painting
Here Købke has executed two different sketches showing horse-drawn carriages. Many of the preliminary studies such as these helped introduce breath and rhythm in the finished painting. Købke was a perfectionist and did not yield until he had captured the exact atmosphere he wished to convey. Nothing escaped the artist’s keen eye.
