Nurseries and kindergartens

At this page you can see which sessions we offer for nurseries, childcare centres and after-school centres. All sessions focus on storytelling.

Different cultural modes of expression are part of the educational plans and curricula of many institutions today. Our education programmes offer excellent opportunities for addressing such issues with young children.

Here, good stories and storytelling take centre stage. All sessions begin with a guided tour of the museum collections and end with a visit to the workshop where the children can work with a range of materials and modes of expressions.

Please note that sessions for crèche children can accommodate a maximum of 12 children; sessions for kindergarten children can accommodate up to 15 children.

Create your own portrait

This Gallery tour focuses on the children’s own portraits. We therefore begin by photographing the children with a digital camera. We then go out to explore some of the Gallery's different portraits: one person may be painted with a green nose and blue hair, while another is shown in his or her finest attire.

We conclude the tour in the workshop, where we continue working on the portraits of the children, drawing upon the works we have just seen.

Target groups: Nurseries, childcare centres and after-school centres

Duration: 1 hour | 2 hours
Price: 450 DKK | 750 DKK

Once upon a time...

SMK has enough stories to fill an entire adventure book. Heavenly creatures, fabled animals and brave heroes abound in the world of painting and sculpture.

Together we look at 2-3 narrative art works and conclude by painting our own fairytale images in the workshop.

Target groups: Nurseries, childcare centres and after-school centres

Duration: 1 hour | 2 hours
Price: 450 DKK | 750 DKK

Kings and queens, princes and princesses

Some are painted in pomp and splendour, while others are surrounded by an astounding fantasy world. We look at some of the Gallery’s paintings of kings and queens and listen to the wonderful stories that surround them.

In the workshop we then create our own visual aesthetic – with kings, queens, princes and princesses.

Target groups: Nurseries, childcare centres and after-school centres

Duration: 1 hour | 2 hours
Price: 450 DKK | 750 DKK

Karsten Kunst at the museum, I and II

“Karsten Kunst at the museum” is a session developed especially for very young children. Its contents have been established through long-term co-operation with a crèche.

A puppet called Karsten Kunst (“Arthur Art”) binds the session together, and each session comprises 25 minutes in the museum collections and 25 minutes at the workshop.

We have found that the theme of “animals and colours” is particularly popular with the young visitors. Themes may vary to reflect current exhibitions at the museum.

We recommend that you:

  • arrive with small groups of children, no more than five (preferably the oldest within the age group) accompanied by two adults.
  • visit the museum at least twice; children of this age benefit greatly from a sense of familiarity and safety.
  • show the children a picture of the Karsten Kunst character prior to their visit so that the children recognise him upon arrival. Download his picture here to print and keep.

You can read more about the test sessions held with the crèche Vuggestuen Kastanie Allé in a report prepared by Ditte Maria Thomsen, a student with the School of Education at Aarhus University. Download the report (PDF format).

Target group:
The oldest crèche children

Duration: 1 hour
Price: DKK 450.

Special considerations for crèche visits

Crowds of people can be unsettling for very young children. We always aim to greet the group in person and to find calm, quiet rooms suited for their visit.

Repetitions and a sense of familiarity are very important for this age group. We recommend that your group makes at least two visits to the museum within the span of a month.

Sessions are planned to allow time to study whatever happens to catch the children’s attention. For example, they might well need to speak about the swans in the lake outside the window because the birds offer an anchor of safety in a house they do not yet know.
