Close to nature

Christen Købke's View from Dosseringen near the Sortedam Lake Looking Towards Nørrebro. Study is merely one of a series of studies, which the painter made for the final oil painting.

From pencil sketch to oil painting
First the artist drew a pencil sketch, then a study in oil followed registering light, air and colour at the location, then the composition was reworked and changed further in the studio in order to finally be the basis of the finished oil painting. The oil sketch was never intended as an independent work to be exhibited, but as an important tool for capturing and furthering the realistic effect of the finished works.

Realism as ideal
The more realistic approach to the motifs of the works can be seen as a reaction against the theatrical effects, which are characteristic of the magnificent landscapes of the theme: Nordic Sublime. The ideal has become a higher degree of realism, but the paintings are still characterised by being carefully composed and idealised.

QUOTATIONS
"Nature is after all the best master."

Painter J.C. Dahl, 1825

"Moreover, the majority of plein air studies produced in the first half of the nineteenth century were not composition sketches for studio works, but were made with the aim of training the eye and the hand and ‘learning nature by heart’, as Dahl himself put it."
Art historian,Torsten Gunnarsson, 2006.

"Art, then, must not represent nature in its natural state alone, but in its spirituality; only in that way is art natural."
Art historian,Torsten Gunnarsson, 2006.
