About Nicolai Abildgaard

Nicolai Abildgaard (1743-1809), is regarded as a 'father figure', but also a controversial and anti-authoritarian figure in Danish art history. Abildgaard was trained in history paintings, which was a distinguished contemporary artistic discipline. He was a well-known artist specializing in scenes from the ancient and Nordic mythology, Shakespeare and the history of Denmark.

After winning the Academy's Great Gold Medal, he went to Rome to continue learning.

Although he contributed to the future debate on reform, he got early official duties e.g. decoration of the newly built Christiansborg Palace.
