Bahia
A subdued evening scene from a small town in northern Brazil, presumably one witnessed by the artist himself. He would have been looking out across a quiet street towards a church outlined against the night sky.
This atmospheric moment shows the artist recording streetlife as it is gradually dwindling in the early hours of the night. Only a few people are left in the street – a sweeper, an old man supporting himself on a cane, and a scantily clad woman in a doorway – while a single car goes by.
The scene is certainly different from any corresponding image that might have been created in the USA, whether in a big city, the suburbs, or a provincial town.
