A Tale about Bullfighting
In 1957 Picasso contributed 26 illustrations to a new edition of Spaniard Pepe Illo’s classical treatise La Tauromaquia (Bullfighting or the Art of the Bullfighter) from the 18th Century. Having done a number of preliminary works, he painted the 26 sugar-lift aquatints onto the plates over the course of just three hours.
Life and death of the bull
The dramatic scenes and fights arising during bullfights are placed within a narrative framework that opens with the bull’s quiet lives on the meadows and the events leading up to the main drama in the arena, to be concluded with the bull’s ritual death at the hand of the bullfighter.
