In the complex, interactive video installation Villar, Eva Koch (b. 1953) lets us experience the story about her mother, Cristobalina, who was separated from her family during the Spanish Civil War and grew up in Norway. Decades later, a coincidence sees her reunited with her mother and siblings in Spain.
Villar is an installation. It consists of six video projections with pictures and stories from a family history. The Installation is interactive, which is to say that visitors can employ sensors to decide what images and scenes they wish to see, and in what sequence.
The project also includes another interactive part, where visitors can use a monitor and headphones to click their way back and forth through Cristobalina’s dramatic story. By using many different filmic and narrative devices, Eva Koch establishes an open space for our perceptions and experience.
Villar is about how stories and tales come to be, and about how coincidences and subjective perceptions affect the way we understand and construct stories. And how no story has a single, final and true version. Rather, stories form widely branching, often random, but always fateful webs of events, actions, and individual perceptions.
