Visit the SMK from your own home

The popular ”Street View” function from Google now allows you to explore the museum’s exhibition rooms and their seven centuries’ worth of art from any location and at any time.

The new, virtual museum visit is the latest initiative to spring from the museum’s participation in the Google Art Project, which now allows Internet users to explore art from more than 260 museums.

In the spring of 2012 the SMK and Ny Carlsberg Glyptotek were the first Danish museums to become part of the Google Art Project. Since then we have been joined by five other Danish museums: Bornholm Art Museum, The Hirschsprung Collection, the National Museum of Denmark, Skagens Museum, and Thorvaldsens Museum.

Now, Street View access has been introduced to most of the Danish museums participating in the project, and this includes the SMK. With just a few clicks you can explore the museum’s exhibition rooms, tracing the outlines of centuries of art.

At the same time each of the Danish museums has chosen a work of art that can now be explored in the form of images with an extremely high resolution of more than 7 billion pixels. The ultra-high resolution makes it possible to study details – such as the artist’s brushwork – that are almost impossible to see with the naked eye.

The SMK’s choice was determined on the basis of a vote taken here on the website and on Facebook and Google+. The winner was L.A. Ring’s masterpiece Whitewashing the Old House from 1908.
