SMK FRIDAYS – Architecture + Art

Date: 18. mar. 2016
Time: 16:00 - 22:00
Price: Free

This edition of SMK Fridays collaborates with CAFx – Copenhagen Architecture Festival – to focus on the fields where art and architecture intersect. Listen as acclaimed artist Bjørn Nørgaard speaks about the special relationship between art and architecture, watch films about architecture and attend a talk by Anna Maria Indrio, who designed the new wing of the SMK. Also with us tonight is the British star artist Ed Atkins, who has just created an all-new work for the SMK’s x-rummet venue.

Talk, talk, walk
Architecture and art have a very special, close-knit relationship. Gain new insight into the fields where the two modes of expression intersect when artist Bjørn Nørgaard enters into a conversation with SMK researcher Birgitte Anderberg to explore the architectural experiments of the 1960s and 1970s – experiments that Nørgaard was directly involved in – and how those experiments continue to affect us today.

In 1996 the SMK got its new wing, designed by the architect Anna Maria Indrio. Tonight Indrio will speak about the new building and the social situations that support and enhance our experience of art. You can also find talks how we go about designing exhibition architecture here at the SMK, and listen as freelance curator Mette Woller speaks about her work with exhibition design, architecture and hip-hop. And you can join a special Instagram walk that shows you the museum from an angle that has lain hidden for years.

Ed Atkins – new exhibition and artist talk
Meet the British artist Ed Atkins, who has just created Ed Atkins. Safe Conduct specifically for x-rummet here at the SMK. Set to the soundtrack of Ravel’s Bolero, the work mixes live action footage with CGI in a carousel of protocol, rendered bodies, abattoirs and metal detectors. Ed Atkins joins us tonight, inviting us to witness a performance reading, a talk featuring exhibition curator Marianne Torp, and a selection of films on the Stage.

In collaboration with CAFx (Copenhagen Architecture Festival), the museum will screen two short films and a documentary film in the SMK cinema. Get behind the scenes of the vast Kunsthistorisches Museum in Vienna in Johannes Holzhausen’s critically acclaimed documentary The Great Museum from 2014. You can also immerse yourself in two meditational short films: Shadowland by John Skoog from 2014 and Tinne Zenner’s Sleeping District from 2015.

Art Talks and artist-DJ
As always you can join us for brief Art Talks that focus on selected works from the SMK collections, considering them in light of this evening’s theme. Kødbyens Mad & Marked will conjure up hand-held cuisine, and of course there will be music and drinks. This evening’s artist-DJ, Svend Sømod, concludes tonight’s SMK Fridays event with a DJ set compiled specifically to interact with the SMK’s architecture and acoustics.
