SMK Fridays: Art in the brain – the brain in art

Date: 16. mar. 2018
Time: 16:00 - 22:00
Price: Free

Film, art talks and a laboratory that powers up the brain. To coincide with this year’s Brain Awareness Week, SMK Fridays homes in on art in the brain – and the brain in art.

On 16 March we focus on the brain in all its aspects – good, bad, diseased and so on – through art talks, films, performances and brain-teasing art workshops. Working in co-operation with Hjernen i Fokus (The Brain in Focus) – an umbrella organisation comprising seven patient organisations – and the documentary film festival CPH:DOX, we explore how the brain is presented in art, science and film.

Selected excerpts from the programme (all conducted or subtitled in English)

Take part in a sound therapy performance
How does sound affect the body and the brain? Take part in a healing sound therapy performance conducted by voice coach and sound therapist Judy Solomon.

Delve into a new video project by Amalie Smith
Lean back in your seat and enjoy the premiere of an entirely new video project created especially for SMK by artist and writer Amalie Smith. Taking her starting point in the museum’s digital collection, Smith takes you on a journey to a fictional future where the digitised works have forged new links and connections – and are inhabited by digital consciousnesses.

Performative laboratory: Power up the brain!
Visit a performative laboratory created by four creative figures: sound artist Birgit Løkke, video designer Jens Mønsted and dancer Bo Madvig working in close collaboration with director Hanne Trap Friis. Through sound, images and movement they probe and explore the phenomenon of concussion – brain injury.

The brain on film
The museum cinema screens a special film programme devised by the documentary film festival CPH:DOX. Through a range of different cinematic works we explore artificial intelligence, invite you to take part in a relaxation exercise and get close to a dying woman whose mind is crumbling due to Alzheimer’s disease.

Brain-teasing art workshop
All night long you can try your hand at making art in our open art workshop and learn more about what drawing, painting and doing crafts does to the brain. During the course of the evening you can also take part in a drawing workshop conducted by artist Ebbe Laurs Sørensen.

As ever, the night will feature music – and you can buy beer, drinks and finger food in the Sculpture Street.
