SMK Fridays offers excellent opportunities for injecting a bit of culture into your Friday night. Relax with a drink, explore the arts at your leisure, and enjoy a wide array of art talks, music, film, and street kitchen food.
The SMK Fridays event on 7 March focuses on a real art rebel: Asger Jorn. Feast your eyes on art that pulls no punches in our new exhibition Asger Jorn – Rastløs Rebel Asger Jorn – Restless Rebel – and play table football on a hexagonal table created in accordance with Asger Jorn’s directions.
Listen to talks and brief lectures on all the things you didn’t know about the ever-rebellious Asger Jorn. The evening will also feature opportunities to meet artists, see a puppetry performance, caravan art, and beer carts.
The artist DJ for the night is Simon Damkjær, who will conjure up music from his laptop while sending a nod or two in Asger Jorn’s direction. As ever, you will plenty of talks, film, drinks, and hand-held food.
Free admission to the Jorn exhibition
The SMK’s large-scale exhibition Asger Jorn – Rastløs Rebel Asger Jorn – Restless Rebel turns our usual notions about Asger Jorn upside down to showcase the radical approach and political and social activism that pervades his entire life’s work. Asger Jorn is anything but well-behaved!
For this night only, admission to the exhibition is free. It will remain open until 8 p.m.
Jorn in 15 minutes + documentary film
Four different talks, each of them lasting just 15 minutes, gives you food for thought and a firmer art historical foundation for appreciating Jorn’s work.
The cinema screens the documentary film Asger Jorn: I begyndelsen var billedet (Asger Jorn – In the Beginning was the Image). In Danish.[RL1]
Asger Jorn would buy old paintings at Paris flea markets and then go on to ‘modify’ or ‘update’ them by painting on top of them. You can try your own hand at painting like Jorn when we invite everyone to modification and 'action painting – Jorn style.'
In 1962 Asger Jorn conducted a thought experiment: he invented a football game that features three teams rather than two. The game was intended to reflect a more complex world where not everything was arranged as binary opposites: for and against, friends and enemies, East and West. He called the new game triolectic football.
Try it out for yourself with our table-game version of triolectic football. And get soundly beaten by our two world champions Amalie Wolf and Nathalie Saltz: they have won the table football world championships twice and are now ready to accept all challengers by the hexagonal football table.
Puppet theatre, artist talk, and a caravan
Two new works of art have entered the SMK’s Sculpture Street: a puppet theatre and a caravan. Join us for an artist talk with the artist Simon Starling – and for a subsequent performance of the puppetry play The Expedition presented in Starling’s puppet theatre; an exact replica of a puppet theatre pavilion located in the Kongens Have park in Copenhagen.
At the other end of the Sculpture Street is a grey caravan. It is in fact a work of art created by the artists FOS and Kenneth A. Balfelt, entitled Fuck the Danish aktiverings police – USSR. The art educator and caravan aficionado Annette Skov invites you to enter the artwork for informal chats about art and caravans.
Street food, bar, and artist DJ
This evening’s artist DJ is the Danish sculptor Simon Damkjær, who will take over the Sculpture Street with his musical stylings while also giving a nod or two to Asger Jorn. As ever, this SMK Fridays event offers a bar, beer carts, and world-class Street Food created by chef Bernard Chesneau and his mobile kitchen.
