Thomas Bang  b. 1938  Danish
Seven attempts to create suitable apparatus for ordinary families. Attempt no. 1. Many years ago, these roughly shaped contraptions with bandage-like components turned up in the settlement. They leaned against a gable end here and there and as their bandaged elements were somewhat reminiscent of body parts from humans or animals, the locals found them unsettling. People in the district were quite unprepared for any outside intervention in their daily life and were mystified by these constructions, which looked like mutilated body parts. Later, however, it was discovered that they were not body parts at all and the purpose of these contraptions remained a mystery. The girl had heard tales about this sudden appearance and the equally sudden disappearance of these objects from a couple of old men. Once again, she was surprised by the apathy that rested like a boundless blanket over the inhabitants of the area. Not many questions were asked in the district.

Then this odd thing happened recently, many years later, that similar bandaged objects appeared along with a collection of accessory-like objects that consisted of a number of different components such as containers and various types of stands and racks. The context in which these bandaged objects were included indicated that this might be some kind of educational equipment. Some of the objects resembled prototypes, designed to illustrate how to repair this and that and to provide first aid to distressed creatures. Overall, the collection seemed to be related to reparation, the girl thought.

She hoped that the ordinary families, for whom this group of objects apparently was intended, would be able to decipher this collection of accessories to a greater  degree than had been the case so many years ago when similar objects had turned up in the settlement.
