An army of dolls
An army of dolls constitutes Zoe Leonard’s Mouth Open, Teeth Showing. This ‘army’ consists of 162 old dolls of all sorts and sizes; Some are pretty and fairly new, others worn and old. No two are the same. Still, they all reflect the time’s various notions about gender and ideals of womanhood. We associate dolls with childhood, innocence and femininity. On the other hand, an army signals masculinity and drive, and the army of dolls testifies to use and abuse.
Zoe Leonard is interested in how we humanise the objects around us in our daily lives. Objects which are marked by wear and tear. She investigates visible, and not least invisible, systems which have an importance for the way we interpret reality.
