Hammershøi and Europe
Exhibition period: 4 February – 20 May 2012
The great spring exhibition of 2012 served a dual purpose: The exhibition presented the Danish artist Vilhelm Hammershøi (1864-1916) and his art as a phenomenon in itself. In addition to this the exhibition took a new – and investigative – approach to Hammershøi by having his art enter into a dialogue with fellow European artists of his day.

Arrangements
The painting best known as Whistler’s Mother had a tremendous impact on the art scene in general and on Hammershøi in particular. Whistler’s painting is characterised by a stringent composition.

Landscapes
Hammershøi’s landscapes are both sober and dreamlike. Landscapes were depicted in a great many different ways at the time, ranging from de-romanticised landscapes to scenes laden with symbolic significance.

Myths without Narratives
The painting Artemis is atypical of Hammershøi’s overall oeuvre. The title refers to mythology, but we do not see a narrative described in the painting.

Introverted Figures
An introspective figure engrossed in reading or a domestic pursuit such as knitting was a central motif within the arts in Hammershøi’s day.
