49 landscapes, 73 beards and the Skinned Head of a Young Bull, publication

"I want to design and print a publication that categorizes and indexes the paintings available within the categories Danish and Nordic Art 1750-1900 and European Art 1300-1800 on the basis of their motives.”

The publication 49 landscapes… is based on a long series of countings and registrations of motifs, artist biographies and other metadata. You could call it a runaway inventory – or a registration and indexing of facts that you didn’t know you were interested in. Under any circumstance, the publication makes it clear that statistics offer new perspectives on the single work and not least on connections between the works. Thus, it appears from the countings that there are more men without beards than with, that the selected works display 387 animals in total, and that there are considerably more landscape paintings than portraits, interiors and still lives in the collection.
