As light goes by – electromechanical machine

Interior in Strandgade, Sunlight on the Floor
(1901) conveys a certain sense of quietness emphasized by the soft sunlight streaming through the window and the woman reading or writing at her table, her back turned.

Kati Hyyppä’s electromechanical machine, a pop-up version of Vilhelm Hammerhøi’s (1864-1916) interior, maintains this atmosphere and even accentuates it by integrating the movement of the sun. In this way the small tableau captures not only a single moment but a span of time veiled in this stillness.

“The passage of light is accompanied by a melody coming from a music box mechanism connected to the motor that moves the lamp. Like an automaton, the machine plays the scene over and over again.”
