Ceal Floyer

The exhibition by Ceal Floyer was shown in x-rummet 15 June - 1 September 2002

Ceal Floyer’s (b. 1968) works are based on extremely simple ideas. There are no hidden or distracting obstacles to be first deciphered. However, despite this directness and no-nonsense approach, her works establish an open, unpredictable and complex situation, which our own conceptual abilities can complete. There always exists a strange tension between cause and effect in Ceal Floyer’s works.

The exhibition in x-rummet consists of three works

is a sound piece. The work reproduces the sound of a clock ticking in a 15-minute sequence, played backwards. 15 Minutes Ago activates the classical thought experiment, or dream, to be able to turn back time. The 15 minutes it takes to listen to the work is suddenly no longer passing, but time has already passed.

Wall
Wall is a wall piece, covering an entire wall (5.5 by 13 metres). Given these dimensions it is thus an extremely monumental work. On the other hand, the actual material involved is very unimpressive. This consists of bands of yellow and black-striped warning tape pasted diagonally on the wall, and carefully matched to each other so that continuous horizontal stripes arise across the width of the wall. There is a correspondence between Ceal Floyer’s wall and certain elements of conceptual and minimal practices. Ceal Floyer’s project is nonetheless radically different. Wall shares, almost accidentally, formal and abstract qualities with these movements and therefore unintentionally resembles something it is not.

Crawl and Scroll
Crawl and scroll is a video piece, shown as a projection without sound. The video consists of a computer arrow, which “crawls” horizontally across the wall or “scroll” vertically up and down. At first it appears that the arrow’s movements are restricted by the wall. Not unlike a pinball machine or the “ball” in the computer-tennis games from the 1970s.
