Summer at the National Gallery of Denmark
The summer will be full of art and fun activities for everyone here at the Gallery. We offer a series of events ranging from jazz to workshops for children – and a spectacular new exhibition: Matisse – Doubles and Variations. So put on your summer outfit and pay us a visit.
Our main event this summer is the opening of the unique exhibition Matisse - fordobling og variation Matisse – Doubles and Variations, which we present in co-operation with the Centre Pompidou, Paris, and the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York.
The exhibition is opened on 14 July at 3 p.m. – i.e. on Bastille Day, the National Day of France. In eager anticipation of the opening itself we will offer French music, snacks, cold beverages, speeches, and activities for children in front of the Gallery’s entrance from 2 p.m. – and you are hereby invited to attend.
Jazz at the Gallery
Before it is time to explore the wondrous universe of Matisse, the Gallery and the Copenhagen Jazz Festival invite you to enjoy five fantastic concerts at the Gallery Stage – absolutely free. In fact, the Jazz Festival is officially opened at the Gallery – on 6 July at 3 p.m., where you can enjoy the musical stylings of Vijay Iyer Trio from USA.
During the festival the Gallery will host concerts with Maria Laurette Friis & Eivind Lønning & Henrik Sundh, Stefan Pasborg/Carsten Dahl Duo, Lundin/Danemo Kvintett feat. Jan Allan, and Susi Hyldgaard Trio "Dansk" - feat. Johannes Enders.
Over the course of the summer we will also stage “jazz for children” events in the park just outside the museum; there will be ample opportunities for dancing for all who feel so inclined. For these events the Children’s Workshop will relocate to the Gallery’s garden, where young visitors can help create a sculpture that will grow larger and larger as the week progresses.

The Children’s Workshop
The Children’s Workshop will host a wealth of activities this summer. Every week has a new theme that lets you try out new ideas. Let your imagination run wild!
Here, you can create your own imaginary creature, explore your travel memories, paint with your nose, and blow coloured bubbles onto pieces of paper. You can paint, draw, and sculpt with clay and plaster – it’s all happing this summer at the Children’s Workshop.
All workshop activities take place Tuesdays – Sundays from 10.30 a.m. to 4.30 p.m. Admission to the Gallery is free; access to the Children’s Workshop costs DKK 45. Tickets for the workshop activity of the day are available from the Information desk from 10 a.m. – 3.45 p.m.

700 years of art
Of course, summertime also gives you the opportunity to take an in-depth view of the Gallery collections, where you will find art that spans seven centuries and major artists from Rubens to Hammershøi onwards to Elmgreen & Dragset.
